21-22 July 2012 – Branch Open Water Weekend – Southwater Park

This weekend there will be a focused two days on the Open Water element of the RLSS Survive and Save Programme.

This will include a range of individual and team activities: teaching, training, and assessments, as well as TA and Instructor courses (see below).

Please bring a packed lunch, towel and clothing to swim in – if you have a wetsuit it would be very sensible to bring it with you!

Timings: Saturday 10am to 4pm / Sunday 1pm to 4pm

NB In the past, some trainers have simply arrived and expected their candidates to be assessed immediately without any training in this environment. This is NOT in the spirit of the new programme which focuses on PRACTICE and the development of skills and confidence. PLEASE expect to come along and take part in two days of activity, of which the assessment may be a small part. Anyone arriving on the second day expecting to be assessed is unlikely to be included.

UPDATE FOR TA(LS) and S&S INSTRUCTORS

On Sunday 22nd July, at Southwater Park, from 10am, there will be a one-day Open Water Instructor’s Course. This will be a combined course allowing Trainer/Assessor (Life Saving) AND Survive and Save Instructors to obtain their relevant qualification in Open Water instruction and, where appropriate, assessment. The old SPLS4 module for TA(LS) included a practical element, and this will be included for ALL participants. We hope that this will make it both a great learning opportunity and also more fun than simply sitting in a classroom all day!

The cost of this course is going to be fully subsidised by the Branch. If you are from outside Surrey, then you’ll have to buy a round of coffees (only joking)!

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT WE KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE ATTENDING THIS COURSE – PLEASE LET THE BLC KNOW ASAP.
