Most of you will have all seen the news in the latest copy of Lifesaver Magazine, but we wanted to remind those of you who are Trainer/Assessors of the next important step that YOU need to take.

FIRST - You need to get a copy of the New Lifesaving Manual for Instructors

The new manual is the comprehensive resource for Lifesaving trainers. If you choose to purchase your own manual (which was available from 1st August 2011), you can order by visiting their site (https://www.lifesaversdirect.co.uk/products/pb3000/) or telephone the order hotline on 0844 824 3440

SECOND – You need to complete the online multiple choice update assessment.

There are two routes to choose from. Option 1 is for those existing TAs who wish to just carry on training and assessing. Option 2 allows you to run courses in your club for future Lifesaving Instructors.

We will probably be running an update evening for the Branch where questions can be asked and experiences shared around the new awards and the extra skills that candidates need to demonstrate. Further details will be posted on the website soon.

We are collecting names of people wanting further Open Water assessments this year. The weekend in July was very successful with around 50 candidates completing about 60 awards. However, there were a few people who successfully completed the Bronze Cross and asked if they could have a go at the Silver Cross later in the year. There was also one person who persudaed her brother to have a go next time and we don’t want to keep him waiting!

By the way, you will all have noticed quite a few members of the public watching… well we have a new recruit as a direct result (one young man has asked his mum if he can join Rookies as soon as he is old enough)!

So… please let Alison know who is interested. Subject to confirmation by the venue, the date is likely to be Sunday 18th September at Southwater Park.

Good luck, Graham

IF YOU ARE AGED OVER 18, AND WORK SPECIFICALLY WITH LIFESAVERS IN THE 14-26 AGE RANGE YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN THIS….

Hi All,

Apologies if you get multiple copies of this e-mail. Here’s an amazing opportunity for volunteers who work with lifesavers who are aged between 14 and 26! Please circulate this to your club/group and any individuals that you know who might be interested. When you read the application form I think you will agree that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
———————————————————
The Icelandic Search and Rescue organisation, ICE-SAR, are hosting an international youth leaders’ seminar from 1 Jul – 11 Jul 2011. The seminar will be attended by delegates from Iceland, Germany, the UK and the Czech Republic.

The aims of the seminar are to:
* Allow lifesaving youth leaders from different countries to build relationships with each other, in order to set up future international youth exchanges.
* Introduce lifesaving youth leaders to different rescue/lifesaving organisations.
* Give lifesaving youth leaders the opportunity to experience different rescue/lifesaving techniques and skills from each organisation.

The UK will be sending 3 male and 3 female delegates to the seminar. Five of the spaces are reserved for youth leaders who are actively involved in working with young lifesavers (“young lifesavers” means lifesavers aged between 14 and 26). The sixth space is also open to applicants who work at a strategic level within a national lifesaving organisation and are responsible for youth work within that organisation.

Delegates will benefit from heavily subsidised travel costs. Youth for Europe will pay 70% of the cost of travel to Iceland and all food, accommodation and travel costs when in Iceland.

For more information or to download an application form please see: http://www.klsc.co.uk/downloads/18-ice-sar/42-volunteer-together-seminar-2011 (I should point out that this opportunity is not directly related to Keynsham LSC – it was just a convenient place to host the application forms…)
———————————————————

As always, I’m happy to discuss if you require further information…
