To avoid any confusion, the following is a summary of the expectations of the RLSS UK for any open water activities organised by Trainers and Assessors and Survive and Save Instructors…

Safety arrangements should be capable of recovering a casualty to shore within 3 minutes of identifying anyone requiring assistance.

If the event involves any element of ‘free swimming’ then appropriate numbers of NBLQ qualified Lifeguards should be present.

If the session is structured and controlled as in programmed activity (RLSS UK assessments are classified as programmed activity) then appropriate numbers of ER-AS (Emergency Response – Activity Supervisor) holders should be present.

IF YOU ARE INTENDING RUNNING OPEN WATER (STILL OR BEACH) ACTIVITIES AND WOULD LIKE TO OBTAIN THE ER-AS QUALIFICATION, PLEASE CONTACT THE BLC URGENTLY SO THAT SUITABLE DATES CAN BE ARRANGED.

As a Survive and Save Instructor, you are qualified to conduct the POOL based activities. However, much of the excitement around the new programme lies in its open (still) water and beach components. Not offering these is depriving your candidates of a great deal of fun and experience.

To train and assess pupils you are expected to have one of three qualifications:

Trainer/Assessor (Beach)
Trainer/Assessor (Lifesaving) with T/A(Open Water) endorsement
Survive and Save Instructor with Open Water Orientation endorsement

If you are a Trainer/Assessor (Lifesaving) and DO NOT have the T/A(Open Water) endorsement (often referred to as SPLS4) then it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you complete this before DECEMBER 2012. This opens up more opportunities to you to train and assess other open water awards than just the ‘heritage’ Bronze and Silver Crosses. PLEASE LET THE BLC KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND THIS COURSE – DEPENDING ON NUMBERS WE WILL BE RUNNING IT AT ONE OR OTHER OR BOTH OF THE OPEN WATER WEEKENDS.

If you are a Survive and Save Instructor and would like to take part in Open Water (both still and beach) training then you need to have attended the RLSS UK Open Water Orientation course. PLEASE LET THE BLC KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND THIS COURSE – DEPENDING ON NUMBERS WE WILL BE RUNNING IT AT ONE OR OTHER OR BOTH OF THE OPEN WATER WEEKENDS.

We are planning two weekends at Eastbourne for Surrey Branch pupils to be trained and assessed for the Beach element of the Survive and Save Programme. The events will be hosted by Eastbourne Volunteer Lifeguards.

The plan is for these weekends to be camping-based and for parents/guardians to attend with their charges if possible. Depending on numbers some adult activity may be organised as well. Costs will be kept to a minimum as we wish as many as possible to attend.

This website entry will be updated with details as they are finalised. In the meantime, if you are either a Surrey-based Survive and Save Instructor or a candidate, wishing to take part or to send candidates, PLEASE contact the BLC URGENTLY as we need to know how approximately how many will be involved.

Most of you will have all seen the news in the latest copy of Lifesaver Magazine, but we wanted to remind those of you who are Trainer/Assessors of the next important step that YOU need to take.

FIRST - You need to get a copy of the New Lifesaving Manual for Instructors

The new manual is the comprehensive resource for Lifesaving trainers. If you choose to purchase your own manual (which was available from 1st August 2011), you can order by visiting their site (https://www.lifesaversdirect.co.uk/products/pb3000/) or telephone the order hotline on 0844 824 3440

SECOND – You need to complete the online multiple choice update assessment.

There are two routes to choose from. Option 1 is for those existing TAs who wish to just carry on training and assessing. Option 2 allows you to run courses in your club for future Lifesaving Instructors.

We will probably be running an update evening for the Branch where questions can be asked and experiences shared around the new awards and the extra skills that candidates need to demonstrate. Further details will be posted on the website soon.

We are collecting names of people wanting further Open Water assessments this year. The weekend in July was very successful with around 50 candidates completing about 60 awards. However, there were a few people who successfully completed the Bronze Cross and asked if they could have a go at the Silver Cross later in the year. There was also one person who persudaed her brother to have a go next time and we don’t want to keep him waiting!

By the way, you will all have noticed quite a few members of the public watching… well we have a new recruit as a direct result (one young man has asked his mum if he can join Rookies as soon as he is old enough)!

So… please let Alison know who is interested. Subject to confirmation by the venue, the date is likely to be Sunday 18th September at Southwater Park.

Good luck, Graham
